I want free money also; at least I am American and legal!

September 4 is … Newspaper Carrier Day

I hope all the newspapers are carrying this story. It emphasizes and demonstrates how stupid and gullible the United States taxpaying citizen is. It further demonstrates how criminal our politicians are.

Talk about a tax loophole. Undocumented workers collected $4.2 billion in a certain tax credit last year, up from less than $1 billion five years ago, according to a new audit.

The report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration looked only at a tax benefit known as the Additional Child Tax Credit, a refundable credit meant for working families. The audit found that as a result of vague U.S. law -- as well as an expansion of the tax credit in stimulus legislation and other measures -- the number of illegal workers collecting the money has skyrocketed.

The inspector general's office expressed concern about the trend and urged the IRS and Treasury Department to determine once and for all whether that money should be paid out. "The payment of federal funds through this tax benefit appears to provide an additional incentive for aliens to enter, reside and work in the United States without authorization, which contradicts federal law and policy to remove such incentives," the report said.

The report highlighted a quirk in U.S. law. Even people who are not authorized to work are supposed to pay the IRS taxes on their income. Many of those people cannot obtain a Social Security number, so to facilitate this the IRS hands out what are known as Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers -- so illegal workers can file returns. However, in doing so many of those workers are claiming tax benefits like the Additional Child Tax Credit. For some, it's a way of making even more money. "Refundable credits can result in refunds even if no income tax is withheld or paid," the report noted.

The Additional Child Tax Credit is an offshoot of another tax credit worth up to $1,000 per child. Restrictions for the tax credits were loosened in 2001, and eligibility was temporarily increased by the 2009 stimulus bill.

"As such, more taxpayers could claim the ACTC or claim a greater amount," the report said. The inspector general's office said 2.3 million undocumented filers claimed the credit in 2010, adding up to $4.2 billion worth of refunds. Not all immigrants who are unauthorized to work are necessarily illegal immigrants. However, any legal immigrant who works without authorization would be in violation of his or her immigration status. The report said that if the administration determines the credits should not be paid in the future, then the IRS needs the authority to stop them.

According to the audit, the IRS agreed with that recommendation.

Who does the IRS hire to do this work? How can anyone be this stupid unless they are illiterate and so far out of the loop that the last news story they recall was of a Japanese soldier being found on a Pacific island still fighting WWII thirty years after it ended.

How can politicians pass such a law and if it is a loophole, why didn’t they notice this at the time or during the last twenty years?

It would be cheaper to not have them file than to pay them money to file. The filing does no good since we do nothing with the information other than know where to send the check.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think about.

What does Jack the Ripper look like?

SEPTEMBER 3, 2011

BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

September 3 is … Skyscraper Day

In eight days we will commemorate the tenth anniversary of losing two significant skyscrapers. NEVER FORGET!

First, our government alters free enterprise by over regulating it. The control the government has over American business, because the politicians think they know better and more than business professionals, is staggering and stifling. The government has proven over and over again that everything they get involved in gets worse.

A prime example is the financial markets and banks. The government has an enormous regulatory apparatus in place to control the markets and the flow of money. With the government watching and in control, the financial markets collapsed. Even though the government was involved in this collapse and likely caused most of it, it is now responding by suing the banks.

The agency that oversees mortgage markets is preparing to file suit against more than a dozen big banks, accusing them of misrepresenting the quality of mortgages they packaged and sold during the housing bubble, The New York Times reported on Thursday. The Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, is expected to file suit against Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank, among other banks, the Times reported, citing three unidentified individuals briefed on the matter. The suits stem from subpoenas the finance agency issued to banks last year. They could be filed as early as Friday, the Times said, but if not filed Friday it said the suits would come on Tuesday.

The government will argue the banks, which pooled the mortgages and sold them as securities to investors, failed to perform due diligence required under securities law and missed evidence that borrowers' incomes were falsified or inflated, the Times reported.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac lost more than $30 billion, due partly to their purchases of mortgage-backed securities, when the housing bubble burst in late 2008. Those losses were covered mostly with taxpayers' money.

The agency filed suit against UBS in July, seeking to recover at least $900 million for taxpayers, and the individuals told the Times the new suits would be similar in scope. A spokesman for the Federal Housing Finance Agency was not immediately available for comment. The Times said Bank of America, JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs all declined comment. A Deutsche Bank spokesman told the Times, "We can't comment on a suit that we haven't seen and hasn't been filed yet."

The practice of subprime lending, wherein mortgage brokers lowered their standards to entice homebuyers to take out large mortgages to buy more expensive homes than they could afford, was a root cause of the mortgage market implosion. News of the suit could have a negative impact on stocks of the banks in question on Friday. JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs are traded on the New York Stock Exchange, while Deutsche Bank is traded on the German exchange. S&P 500 stocks index futures were trading down 0.6 percent in Asia. U.S. Treasury futures also ticked higher.

The Times report said investors fear that if banks are forced to pay out billions for mortgages that defaulted, the suit could sap earnings for years and contribute to further losses across the financial services industry.

How can the government build a bureaucracy to prevent the financial collapse of the economic system and when it fails in doing its job, it sues the very industry they previously caused to fail?

I have written a book about Jack the Ripper called Holmes the Ripper. I made money with this work of fiction as have many writers and authors over the years. Now a retired Scotland Yard officer is at it.

A retired British murder squad detective has put together what he claims is an image of Jack The Ripper - the unidentified serial killer who terrorized London in the 1880s.

Trevor Marriott created an e-fit of the man he believes was the responsible for the Ripper murders, a German merchant named Carl Feigenbaum, for a BBC television program. Feigenbaum was a suspect at the time of the murders, and reportedly told his lawyer that he had a "desire to kill and mutilate every woman who falls in my way." He was later convicted of killing his landlady in Manhattan, and died in the electric chair in New York's Sing Sing prison.

No photographs of Feigenbaum exist, so the e-fit (an electronic artist's impression) was based on eyewitness descriptions. There are hundreds of suspects who have been investigated by sleuths through the years, but no-one has ever been able to conclusively prove the killer's identity.

This is not the first time that experts have attempted to use modern policing techniques to identify the Ripper. In 2006, Scotland Yard experts created this e-fit of what they thought the Ripper would look like.

The person he identifies as the Ripper is one of the top three suspects. He did not exactly go out on a limb here. The picture would seem to be even less useful since no one is alive that would have been alive in the 1880s and could recognize him. Since no pictures exist, any living family members would not know what he looks like nor would they have any old photos gathering dust in a family scrapbook.

September 2 is … National Beheading Day

At this moment many people would love to invite former Vice-President Dick Cheney to a beheading, his own. Even bitter old men who cannot live out of the limelight get to write a book. If you do not like it or think you will not enjoy what is in it, do not buy it or read it.

This is just what the NBA needs while they are shut down over a labor dispute. Many of the criminals, including accused murderers, in the NBA do not feel being paid in excess of ten million dollars a year is unacceptable. Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton, who was suspended from the league for having guns in a locker room with teammate Gilbert Arenas, was arrested Monday in Southern California to face a murder charge in a deadly Atlanta shooting, an attorney said Monday.

Crittenton was taken into custody at about 8 p.m. at John Wayne Airport in Orange County after checking in for a Delta Air Lines flight to Atlanta, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. Eimiller said he was arrested without incident by FBI agents with assistance from the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities were trying to determine whether Crittenton will make an initial appearance in federal court, or be taken directly to Atlanta to face state charges there.

"He offered to turn himself in," Lawyer Brian Steel told The Associated Press earlier Monday. "He's not guilty. We look forward to getting it to the courts." Blah-blah-blah, lie, lie lie.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported that Crittenton planned to surrender in Atlanta. Police earlier obtained a murder warrant for Crittenton in the Aug. 19 shooting of 22-year-old Jullian Jones, a mother of four young children. Police say Jones was walking with two men when she was shot and they believe one of the men with her was the target.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos on Friday said the motive appears to be retaliation for a robbery in April, in which Crittenton was a victim. When asked earlier Friday about Steel's statement that Crittenton planned to surrender, Atlanta police didn't confirm it. "Mr. Crittenton is wanted for murder," Sgt. Curtis Davenport said late Monday. "We will be pleased when he is taken into our custody in a peaceful manner."

When he was with the Washington Wizards in December 2009, Crittenton and Arenas had a dispute over a card game on a team flight. Two days later, Arenas brought four guns to the locker room and set them in front of Crittenton's locker with a sign telling him to "PICK 1." Crittenton then took out his own gun. Crittenton pleaded guilty in January 2010 to a misdemeanor gun charge and received a year of unsupervised probation. Arenas entered his guilty plea on Jan. 15. He served a short time in a halfway house.

Steel said he was retained by Crittenton's family on Monday morning, and was in contact with Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard and the FBI Fugitive Task Force to make arrangements for the former player's arrest. "They asked that he come to Atlanta, and we said 'no problem,'" Steel said. Wonder why he went to California then. Is he directionally challenged or just stupid or is the lawyer just a liar? Many lawyers need to learn to say nothing rather than say something so ridiculous they lose credibility.

Crittenton is on the roster of the NBA developmental league's Dakota Wizards, waiting for the labor dispute to end so he can sign with an NBA team or maybe not.

President Obama would not take on the Republican party debate head to head so e moved his big speech about jobs to Thursday night. Now he is taking on the opening night of the NFL season and the Green Bay Packers. He has mentioned how important the job situation is and how it has to be dealt with swiftly; of course that was months ago and he announced this speech over five weeks ago. If is so important why did he wait and why didn’t he move it to Tuesday and not conflict with any major TV event? Just wondering? We need a fighter in the White House not an apologetic wimp made out of clay capable of being molded by his opposition.

Today is a good day to feel like a Nutt.

SEPTEMBER 1, 2011

BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

September 1 is … Emma M. Nutt Day

Emma M. Nutt Day celebrates the first woman telephone operator in America. The facts surrounding this holiday are sparse but interesting. This day was established when life was simpler and not everything was so damn serious.

Emma Nutt became the first woman telephone operator on September 1, 1878. She loved the job, and worked at it for 33 years. This special day celebrates the world of telephone operators. It was a very important job for many decades. Today, the position has been eliminated being replaced by automation in telephone systems.

A little side note about Emma: According to Emma, she was "very thankful that my first name was not Imma".

Telephone operators have a sorted history. In January 1878 the Boston Telephone Dispatch company had started hiring boys as telephone operators, starting with George Willard Croy. Boys (including reportedly Emma's husband) had been very successful as telegraphy operators, but their attitude (lack of patience) and behavior (pranks and cursing) was unacceptable for live phone contact, so the company began hiring women operators instead. Thus, on September 1, 1878, Emma was hired, starting a career that lasted 33 or 37 years, retiring in 1911 or 1915. A few hours after Emma started work her sister Stella Nutt became the world's second female telephone operator, making Stella Nutt and Emma Nutt the first two sisters in world history being telephone operators although, unlike Emma, she only stayed for a few years.

The customer response to her soothing, cultured voice, and patience was overwhelmingly positive, so boys were soon replaced by women. In 1879 these included Bessie Snow Balance, Emma Landon, Carrie Boldt, and Minnie Schumann, the first female operators in Michigan.

Emma was hired by Alexander Graham Bell who is credited with inventing the first practical telephone; apparently she changed jobs from a local telegraph office. She was paid a salary of $10 per month for a 54 hour week. She, reportedly, could remember every number in the telephone directory of the New England Telephone Company.

To be an operator, a woman had to be unmarried, between the ages of seventeen and twenty-six. She had to look prim and proper, and have arms long enough to reach the top of the tall telephone switchboard. Much like many other American businesses at the turn of the century, telephone companies discriminated against people from certain ethnic groups and races. African American and Jewish women were not allowed to become operators.

If you have misplaced something and look for it for a while before discovering it, after you use it, put it back in the first place you looked for it. It will be there the next time you look for it.

If you think someone does not like you, ask to borrow their pen or pencil. They will like you after that.

If you are having a conversation with someone and you think you have lost their interest, fold your arms. If they fold their arms, they are still interested.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think about.
