Good thing Lassie isn't from Arkansas.

DATE: January 4, 2011. January 4 is …Trivia Day and Humiliation Day

BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

So now we have red wing blackbirds, by the thousands, falling out of the sky in northwestern Arkansas dead. This occurred just days before 100,000 drum fish were found dead, floating in the Arkansas River. Authorities, who do not really know what happened to either of the animal species, say the mysterious deaths are not related. How do they know? Suicide is not suspected.

Police in Ohio have taken a ten year old boy into custody for the killing of his mother. His 46 year old mother was shot one time in the head with a .22 caliber rifle. The boy reportedly went to neighbor’s house and told them he had just shot his mother. He has been charged in her dearh.

The parents of a former junior high school basketball player have filed a federal lawsuit against the school district claiming their son’s Constitutional Rights were violated when he was kicked off the team for refusing to comply with the team rules about hair length. The ignorant parents said in the lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court that their son was kicked off the Greensburg Junior High team after he refused to cut his hair to comply with team rules, which require that players' hair be above their eyebrows, collars and ears.

Apparently the parents do not grasp the concept of team. The parents, making it about them and not the boy, want the court to rule that the policy is unconstitutional, force the school district to stop enforcing the policy and award any necessary damages to the family. I am sure this school district has enough money just laying around to pay for the defense of this frivolous lawsuit.

On this day in 1970, television history was made when super dog Lassie was hit by a car while pushing a child away from danger.
Lassie was seen on TV for the next month suffering from amnesia. Here is the list of episodes (thanks to Linda Young’s Unofficial Lassie Web site):
The Road Back, Part 1 (01/04/70):
An injured Lassie, stricken with amnesia, is lost in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
The Road Back, Part 2 (01/11/70):
Lassie wanders Chinatown searching for home without knowing where it is.
The Road Back, Part 3 (01/18/70):
Still unsure of her identity, Lassie helps a retarded girl.
The Road Back, Part 4 (01/25/70):
Her memory recovered, Lassie searches for Scott.
The Lassie TV series, inspired by Eric Knight’s 1940 best-seller, Lassie Come Home, went through three formats centered around a different master. In 1954, Jeff Miller inherited the dog. In 1957, a 7-year-old, named Timmy, was adopted by a childless couple. In 1964, Lassie was given to a forest ranger named Corey Stuart.
Lassie, incidentally, was always played by a male dog and was the first inductee named to the Animal Hall of Fame in 1969.
As we start 2011, it is an appropriate time to review a few quotes from Abraham Lincoln and find hope and knowledge in the inspiration they instill.
“The people themselves, and not their servants, can safely reverse their own deliberate decisions.”
“The people will save their government, if the government itself will allow them.”

“The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.

“The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.

“The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty.
Plainly, the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of liberty.

“The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who'll get me a book I ain't read.”

“The time comes upon every public man when it is best for him to keep his lips closed.

“The way for a young man to rise is to improve himself in every way he can, never suspecting that anybody wishes to hinder him.”

“There is another old poet whose name I do not now remember who said, "Truth is the daughter of Time."

“There is nothing true anywhere, The true is nowhere to be seen; If you say you see the true, This seeing is not the true one.

“These capitalists generally act harmoniously and in concert, to fleece the people.

“These men ask for just the same thing, fairness, and fairness only. This, so far as in my power, they, and all others, shall have.

“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.

“This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or exercise their revolutionary right to overthrow it.
