Don’t you think Todd Stroger would make a great governor for Illinois? The way his life is going, he might be able to complete his prison sentence before he is elected.

Remember when Noah said to the Lord
“Hey Lord.

I’ve got green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I’m so forlorn
I just can’t find no unicorns”

This was right after the Lord says to Noah,

“Hey Noah, I’ll tell you what to do Build me a floating Zoo,
            And take some of those
            Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you’re born
            Don’t you forget My unicorns”

This is from The Unicorn Song, words and music by Shel Silverstein and made famous by The Irish Rovers in the 1960s.

A real unicorn died recently in a village in Laos. The villagers had captured it in the past three weeks and held it in captivity. It died shortly thereafter. It is the only one known to have ever been in captivity.

The real name for this antelope like animal is Saola. It was first observed in the wild by scientists in 1992. Before that, only stories of its existence and an occasional photo evidenced it was an actual animal and not a myth. It is believed less than 250 are alive in the world, non in captivity.

The Saola is often referred to as the Asian unicorn: although it has two horns. This forest dwelling bovine is one of the rarest mammals in the world. It lives in Vietnam and Laos, near the border between the two countries.

How many of these creatures do you think died during the Vietnam War? The answer to that question may be none or very few. Scientist, who confirmed its existence in 1992, have done studies of the species through morphology and DNA . They have concluded it is a new bovine genus, a new species. Welcome to our world.

The animal is dark brown with a white stripe down the back. It weighs 90 kg and grows to 85 cm at the shoulder. Both sexes have the horns, that are black and grow to around a half a meter in length. They travel in twos and live above sea level. They are skittish in nature, rarely being seen in the wild.

To illustrate an unfortunate human frailty, a Laotian conservation official said it was unfortunate the Saola died but at least now we know they exist and where. Let’s capture them and kill them to prove they exist. HUUMMM?

“Force is all-conquering, but its victories are short-lived.”

“If it’s true that our species is alone in the universe, then I’d have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.”
