Illinois politics and merging

SEPTEMBER 15, 2010

Scott Lee Cohen, your fifteen minutes of fame ended nearly seven months ago. Why don’t you just go rip-off some more poor people with your currency exchanges. Take a few more ‘roids before you attack someone with a knife or intimidate your wife. Oh yeah, don’t forget to pay your child support from your millions. These are some of the allegations made against Cohen. I do not know him and do not know if any of the allegations are true, but, being a betting man I would …
This guy was actually elected to run with Pat Quinn as his Lt. Governor by Democrats. He was pressured to quit the ticket, but not by Quinn. He did so in February. To hear him talk about his past, everybody else was at fault, not him. The divorce was ugly. O. K., many are. The Order of Protection his ex-girlfriend got was a “sneaky, rotten” thing to do.
The decision to quit the ticket was the last and perhaps the first good choice he has made in his life. It is pretty sad this person was the best the Democrats could come up with for Lt. Governor. Sometimes, the Lt. Governor becomes the Governor, like Quinn and in New York.
Illinois routinely elects criminals to state-wide office. Usually, however, they are greedy criminal types but not violent criminals.
I am happy the Iranian government saw fit to release one of three hikers they have incarcerated for spying. It is just coincidence they released the young girl after her illness came to light and we paid $500,000.00 for her release. I do not hike much. If I did, I would not hike near the Iraq/Iran border. This seems pretty obvious to me. You can’t blame the Iranians for not believing the three hikers were not spies. They refused to accept the hikers were just stupid Americans.
Driving a car is rather simple. It can be dangerous, but for the most part, driving is not complicated. We have trained monkeys to drive. Why can’t we train people to properly merge?
Merging is an easy maneuver. The concept is, you are on one road wanting to get unto another road. You enter onto a ramp to get unto the destination road. Accelerate to the speed of the traffic on the road you are entering while on the ramp. As you approach the destination road and before the end of the ramp you merge or join into the traffic on the destination road. There is no reason to apply your brakes. There are no Yield or Stop signs on the ramp. You are not supposed to pull over to the right and wait for your turn. In merging, it is always your turn. The ramp is not designed as a parking lot. Stopping is not expected or warranted. Just figure the traffic on your destination road has done this before. They understand the concept even if you do not. A space for your merging vehicle will be available when you merge. REMEMBER, THERE ARE NO INVISIBLE STOP OR YIELD SIGNS ONLY YOU CAN SEE ON THE RAMPS OF THE WORLD.

It only takes one idiot at the front of a five mile-long string of traffic to hit his brakes. That will result in everyone hitting their brakes and slowing down, eventually five miles away, for no reason except for a merging challenged driver.
